There are multihyphenates, and then there is Ufuoma McDermott, who spoke of her supermodel status in a successful acting career that starred in many blockbuster movies, winning hearts in the process.
Ufuoma Ejenobor came to the entertainment scene when she emerged as the first runner on the beauty pageant organized annually by Miss Nigeria.
On 21 April 1981, Ufuoma Stacey Egenrbor McDermott was born. She was born in the state of Benin Edo but her parents are from Delta State. Her father, at the tender age of seven, gave her a pet name “Isio” in their native Urhobo language which means “Star.” The name was inspired by the TELEFEST program star actress NTA Benin put together, “The Pot of Life.” Her parents moved a lot after her birth in search of greener pastures.
Ufuoma attended Alama private school in Jos, Plateau state. She was enrolled at Tunwase Nursery and primary school in Ikeja, Lagos when her parents left Jos before moving to Molly International Nursery and primary Ajao Estate where she completed her primary school education. For her secondary education, Ufuoma attended Federal Government College, Odogbolu, Ogun State. She studied French at the University of Lagos through a holiday scholarship program of the federal government. Ufuoma also holds a Master of Public and International Relations degree from Lagos University. She has put in a box other certifications and diplomas too.
She enrolled for an acting course at the New York Film Academy in Los Angeles much later in her career and later on a film-making course at the Hollywood Film Institute at Dov Simen. Ufuoma also holds a London Business School diploma in Human Resource Management. She is 39 years old.
In the show business Ufuoma began her career as a photographic model in the year 2000. She contested the Miss Ebony pageant show in 2001, winning it. She had been crowned Miss Congeniality for her participation in the beauty show “Miss Commonwealth.” She appeared to be very optimistic in the modeling world and contested several pageant shows. She was named the first runner up for the pageant show “Queen Africa” in 2002, she finished as the first runner up in the pageant show ‘Queen of All Country’ in 2003. She contested for the pageant show “Miss Nigeria” in 2004, and ended up as the first runner. In the same year, however, she broke the first runner’s curse by winning “Miss Earth Nigeria”.
Ufuoma has decided to try out a new challenge by transforming something that’s so familiar in the modeling world into an actress. Her acting debut came in 2004, when she played a detective role in the film “The President Must Die.” She appeared in four more movies the same year, including the series “Edge of Paradise” where she played the role of widow Chibuzor. The film was produced by the network Royal Roots.
Ufuoma soon became a force in Nollywood, and became the form for which actress film producers want to work. She played Lillian Wrighton ‘s role in the fun series “My Mum and I,” which helped to better reveal a career in the acting. She has appeared in all over 50 Nollywood films and Ufuoma ‘s place in the industry was not ignored when the cinema film sector became alive in Nigeria. In 2016, in the movie “Okafor ‘s reign” which starred actors like Blossom Chukwujekwu and Omoni Oboli, she played the role of Ify, the unfaithful wife of Richard Mofe Damijo.
Her film “Christmas Is Coming” came out in cinemas in 2017. She wrote the script, and directed it. Henri Atta, a tomboy who experiences a series of misadventures after undergoing a makeover in the movie by her flatmates, also played the lead role in Ufuoma. Their roles were so well played by Chioma Chukwuka and Deyemi Okanlawon. That same year she appeared in “Wives on Strike: The Revolution” by Omoni Oboli.
In 2018, Ufuoma played the role of Professor Oghogho in the Nigerian comedy film “What Just Happened,” starring Segun Arinze, Mike Ezuruonye, and Toyin Abraham. She also starred in AY Makun Ufuoma ‘s movie “Merry Men 2,” which has won many modeling awards. During her acting career she has won only the City People Awards for Best Actress Category in the movie “Christmas Is Coming.” She has also been nominated for various awards from Nollywood industry.
On 23rd April 2010, Ufuoma married Steven McDermott.
The profession of her personal life and husband is kept far from the media’s prying eyes. The couple have together two children; a son named Isio Jared who was born on 10 October 2012 and a daughter, Kesiena Alize, who was born on 8 August 2015.
